TAD Motors Unveils Kenya's First EV Prototypes

On 27 November 2025, Nairobi witnessed a historic moment as TAD Motors unveiled Kenya's first homegrown electric vehicle (EV) prototypes. This milestone is more than a product launch—it marks the beginning of a bold journey toward locally built, sustainable mobility solutions designed for African roads, African people, and Africa's future.

These prototypes lay the foundation for full-scale production at the Naivasha Special Economic Zone (SEZ) starting in 2026, signaling Kenya's ambition to become a regional hub for EV manufacturing. The vehicles are being engineered with African conditions in mind: durability for local roads, cost-efficiency for both private and commercial users, smart technology integration, and low-emission, future-forward energy systems.

The Unveiling: Innovation Meets Vision

The event drew influential thinkers, innovators, and policymakers, emphasizing the national significance of clean transport and sustainable industrialization. TAD Motors showcased five prototype models designed to serve a variety of needs:

  • Dhahabu – premium urban SUV
  • Amani – compact city car for urban commuting
  • Fahari – executive-class sedan
  • Makena – rugged utility EV
  • AZIZI – full-size electric SUV tailored for private and commercial applications.

Each model offers a range of around 250 km per charge, with the option to recharge from a standard household socket—making EV ownership practical even before public charging networks expand.

Voices at the Launch

The ceremony was filled with insights from leaders shaping Kenya's EV and sustainability landscape. Rather than quoting them at length, it's clear each brought a unique perspective:

Tadesse Tessema, TAD Motors CEO, spoke on the vision for locally made, practical EVs:

"We're humbled and energised by the support from our partners, innovators, and community who made this day possible."
